There are several terms in Daoism naming the dynamic spectrum of body & mind \u2013 these are well worth studying and understanding if we are undertaking Daoist practice, especially if we are engaging scriptures in classical Chinese.<\/p>\n
Below is a glossary briefly introducing a few of these terms for\u00a0reference when\u00a0following along with this talk: Body & Mind: A Few Definitions<\/a>.\u00a0 Each of these involves years of study to really appreciate, but let this be a base for your growth in understanding these concepts.<\/p>\n J\u012bng-Q\u00ec-Sh\u00e9n<\/span><\/p>\n J\u012bng (\u7cbe): essence-of-embodiment, coagulation of life-essence, tendency of qi to appear as form.<\/p>\n Q\u00ec (\u6c23): movement, vitality, time, change.<\/p>\n Sh\u00e9n (\u795e): spirit, awareness.<\/p>\n J\u012bng-q\u00ec-sh\u00e9n (\u7cbe\u6c23\u795e) often appear as a triad.<\/p>\n Sh\u0113n-X\u012bn<\/u><\/p>\n Sh\u0113n (\u8eab): body, life \u2013 bundle of jing-qi.<\/p>\n X\u012bn (\u5fc3): heart-mind, abode of spirit.<\/p>\n Sh\u0113n-x\u012bn (\u8eab\u5fc3) is the most literal translation for \u201cbody & mind\u201d.<\/p>\n X\u00ecng-M\u00ecng-L\u00edng<\/span><\/p>\n X\u00ecng (\u6027): inner-nature, spiritual-essence, character.<\/p>\n M\u00ecng (\u547d): fate-pattern, j\u012bng-trajectory, destiny, contract with Heaven.<\/p>\n X\u00ecng-m\u00ecng (\u6027\u547d) is a dynamic, complex concept referring to spiritual-nature & embodied life-path.<\/p>\n L\u00edng (\u9748): spirit-potency, sometimes mistranslated as soul \u2013 the collective potency of x\u00ecng-m\u00ecng (\u6027\u547d).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There are several terms in Daoism naming the dynamic spectrum of body & mind \u2013 these are well worth studying and understanding if we are undertaking Daoist practice, especially if we are engaging scriptures in classical Chinese.
