Song Dynasties.\u00a0 This text has Laozi running all through it.\u00a0 The Chinese appears to be written for recitation or chanting, however it\u2019s not easy to make the English read smoothly from couplet to couplet.\u00a0 I\u2019ve done my best and I think it\u2019s good enough.\u00a0 Wuji &amp; choose<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Without like &amp; dislike<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the chamber is naturally clear &amp; bright<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But make the smallest distinction<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and set apart Heaven &amp; Earth<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we wish to perceive the Original<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">don\u2019t keep for &amp; against<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For &amp; against mutually contend<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">serving to afflict the heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we don\u2019t understand this mysterious point<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it is futile to seek tranquility<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Complete union with supreme emptiness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is without deficiency, without excess<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But choose to accept or reject<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">then it is not so<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Do not pursue entanglements<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">yet don\u2019t dwell stuck in vacuity<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cultivate Oneness with a peaceful heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">thusly obliterating self-exhaustion<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Stilling movement to return to stillness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">only generates more movement<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Only stuck in two sides<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">we cannot know cultivation of Oneness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Not accessing cultivation of Oneness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">dwelling in duality, we forsake merit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Denying existence, we drown in existence<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">succumbing to vacuity, we get stuck in vacuity<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The more we talk, the more we think<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the further we wander astray<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cut off talking, cut off thinking<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">then there is nowhere we cannot access<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Return to the root and get the point<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but pursue appearance and lose the lineage<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In a flash return the radiance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and successfully transcend vacuity<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Transcending vacuity, shift &amp; transform<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">with each &amp; every fantastic appearance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is no use to seek reality<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">just wait for appearance to cease<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dwell not in dual appearance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">carefully avoid chasing &amp; seeking<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Make right &amp; wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and the heart gets lost in confusion<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Duality comes from the One<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the One does not guard itself<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The heart of the One is unborn<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ten-thousand dharmas are no hindrance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">No hindrance, no dharmas<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">no birth, no heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThis\u201d surrenders when \u201cthat\u201d is extinguished<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cthat\u201d is banished when \u201cthis\u201d drops<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThat\u201d depends on \u201cthis\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cthis\u201d depends on \u201cthat\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we wish to know these two<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">their origin is vacant Oneness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In vacant Oneness these two are equal<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">together they contain ten-thousand forms<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Do not distinguish coarse &amp; fine<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">extinguish one-sided views<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The great Dao has a wide body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">not easy, not difficult<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Small views deceive like a fox<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they wander quickly yet respond late<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Grasp them and lose our parameters<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">certain to enter deviant ways<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just let things be as they are<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and the body neither departs nor abides<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Trust our nature to merge with Dao<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">at ease, troubles disappear<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Overly studying distorts reality<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">sinking into dimness and ineptitude<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is inept to labor the spirit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Why neglect our kin?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we wish to obtain the One Vehicle<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">do not dislike the Six Dusts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Not disliking the Six Dusts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">stay aligned with correct awareness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sages stay with wuwei<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">fools bind themselves<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dharma is not some unusual dharma<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it is fantasy to cherish anything<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Stirring up the heart\u2019s desire<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">is this not a great mistake?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Confusion gives birth to isolation and upheaval<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">awakening is without good &amp; evil<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Every \u201cthing\u201d has two sides<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">overflowing beyond the brim<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dreams, illusions, vacant flowers<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">why labor to grasp them?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Gain &amp; loss, right &amp; wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">release them at once<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If the eye never sleeps<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">all dreams dissolve of themselves<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When the heart makes no distinctions<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the ten-thousand dharmas are as One<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As the One Original Body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">sever and forget all karmic entanglements<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">View the ten-thousand dharmas as equal<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">reverting and returning of themselves<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Thereby obliterating their position<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">unable to hold to their locale<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Stilling movement, there is no movement<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Moving stillness, there is no stillness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Without the presence of duality<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">how can the One thusly exist?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the end, all extremes are exhausted<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">nothing survives this path<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Commit the heart to equanimity<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and all phenomena come to rest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Foxly deceit is purged and exhausted<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">restoring trust and rectitude<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Every \u201cthing\u201d doesn\u2019t last<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">losing all recollection<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Empty, bright, self-illuminating<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">no labor of the heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Not dwelling on any thoughts<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">knowledge &amp; emotion cannot fathom this<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the true Dharma realm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">there is no self, no other<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If we want immediate accord<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">just say \u201cnot-two\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In \u201cnot-two\u201d, everything is the same<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">nothing is not contained<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sages of the ten directions<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">all enter into this lineage<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The lineage does not rush or delay<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">one moment\u2019s thought is ten-thousand years<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Nothingness is located nowhere<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">pervading the ten directions, yet right before our eyes<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The extremes of small &amp; large alike<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">sever and forget all distinctions<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The extremes of large &amp; small alike<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">see no borders manifest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Existence is nothingness<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">nothingness is existence<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It may seem not so<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but we must not hold onto appearance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">One is everything<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">everything is One<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So surely indeed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">why worry without end?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Trust the heart to \u201cnot-two\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">as not-two trusts the heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Words and speech sever Dao<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it is not going, coming, or present<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Translation by\u00a0Nameless Stream (<\/em>\u7121\u540d\u5ddd<em>)<\/em><em>, 2019<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allow me to share this wonderful text attributed to S\u0113ngc\u00e0n, the 3rd\u00a0Chinese Zen Patriarch, who lived in the Sui Dynasty prior to the heyday of Zen, which is generally accepted to have been the Tang &amp;
