{"id":811,"date":"2020-07-17T16:18:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T00:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/?p=811"},"modified":"2020-07-17T21:22:57","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T05:22:57","slug":"belonging-nowhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/2020\/07\/17\/belonging-nowhere\/","title":{"rendered":"Belonging Nowhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-816\" src=\"https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"WuSuo-nowhere-wht\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/oldoakdao.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/WuSuo-nowhere-wht.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lineage is very important in Chinese Daoism.\u00a0 My \u201cwuweidao\u201d lineage teacher told me however that as I came to occupy the space that he handed down I would find myself less and less affiliated with any particular sect \u2013 simply open, undefined, belonging nowhere (\u7121\u6240).\u00a0 As I become more comfortable abiding in the space that he shared, I come to understand what he meant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wuweidao doesn\u2019t give us any job to do or goal to achieve.\u00a0 We\u2019re not climbing a path up to some mountain peak but simply occupying the space we\u2019re in \u2013 the true space we\u2019re actually in.\u00a0 This space doesn\u2019t have any characteristics.\u00a0 It\u2019s neither Chinese nor Western.\u00a0 Neither driven nor accomplished.\u00a0 It has no forms or traditions.\u00a0 Anything we attribute to it is wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Dao De Jing Chapter 56, Laozi says: \u201cCannot embrace, cannot neglect, cannot help, cannot harm, cannot exalt, cannot debase.\u201d\u00a0 This is sublime, high-level teaching that slips through the fingers of practices that seek to embrace, nourish, or exalt our condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bodhidharma likewise said: \u201cIt has never lived or died, appeared or disappeared, increased or decreased.\u00a0 It\u2019s not pure or impure, good or evil, past or future.\u00a0 It\u2019s not true or false.\u00a0 It\u2019s not male or female.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t appear as a monk or a layman, an elder or a novice, a sage or a fool, a buddha or a mortal.\u00a0 It strives for no realization and suffers no karma.\u00a0 It has no strength or form.\u00a0 It\u2019s like space.\u00a0 You can\u2019t possess it and you can\u2019t lose it.\u201d (tr.
